Thomson-Friedman Endowed Scholarship
The Thomson-Friedman Scholarship was established in 1986 by the late Michael and Rose Friedman to honor the late Dr. Andrew Thomson, a physician leader at Rush for three decades. This scholarship supports students enrolled in Rush Medical College.
A native of Gary, Indiana, Dr. Thomson attended Dartmouth College before serving in the Army medical department in World War II. He received his bachelor’s degree and medical doctorate from Indiana University and joined the medical staff at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in 1963. During his long tenure at Rush, Dr. Thomson served as president of the medical staff in the 1980s and served on the Board of Trustees. A committed philanthropist, Dr. Thomson spearheaded the fundraising campaign for Rush Medical College in the late 1990s, raising over $8 million from the medical staff. He was also actively involved at his alma maters, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Night Ministry. Dr. Thomson and his wife Peg are also honored with an endowed chair in the Department of Internal Medicine at Rush.
The scholarship was funded by Mr. and Mrs. Friedman, longtime patients and admirers of Dr. Thomson. Mr. Friedman was a successful attorney in Chicago, and he and his wife donated generously to Rush and other health-related causes.
