Turner Family Endowed Scholarship for Primary Care

The Turner Family Endowed Scholarship for Primary Care was established in 2010 by David Turner, MD, FACR, and his wife, Bonita.

Dr. Turner was a longtime radiologist at Rush, serving as chairperson of the Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine from 2003 – 2009. Prior to that, he led the Section of Magnetic Resonance Imaging for nearly 20 years. In his career, Dr. Turner authored or co-authored over 160 journal articles, books and book chapters, and abstracts in the areas of nuclear medicine, MRI and medical decision making. He also served as a member of the Radiology Special Study Section of the National Institutes of Health and chairman of committees of the American College of Nuclear Physicians and the Society of Nuclear Medicine. In addition to his clinical and research interests, Dr. Turner was a popular educator at Rush, having received the “Teacher of the Year” award twice.

In addition to Dr. Turner’s long career, his daughter, Joanna Turner Bisgrove, MD, was a Rush Medical College graduate and is a highly-regarded family practice specialist in Wisconsin. She has recently been elected to the Governing Council of the Women Physicians Section of the American Medical Association.

Impact

To support scholarship for students in the Rush Medical College with an interest in pursuing a primary care specialty. Recipients should be in good academic standing and demonstrate financial need. When possible, the scholarship should support the same student(s) for all four years of medical school. Students are required to shadow a practicing family physician, pediatrician or general internist for two consecutive weeks.
